Hacker accessed one of video game publisher Ubisoft's websites, acquiring user information.
How many victims? Ubisoft has not revealed how many accounts were compromised, but their top video games sell in the millions.
What type of personal information? Usernames, email addresses and encrypted passwords, but the intruders were unable to obtain information such as phone numbers and physical addresses. According to a statement, no payment information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning credit/debit card information is not at risk.
What happened? Ubisoft announced that the credentials were stolen and used to illegally access its online network.
What was the response? Ubisoft quickly closed off access to the hackers and began an investigation in concert with authorities and internal and external security experts. Ubisoft's security teams are taking measures to expand and strengthen security.
Details: The company recommends users change their passwords with Ubisoft and also on other sites where they use the same password. Ubisoft's gaming services were not affected by the security breach. An investigation is ongoing, and Ubisoft declined to provide additional details to SCMagazine.com.
