Alleged BlackShades creator backs out of plea deal

The 24-year-old Swedish man allegedly behind the creation of the BlackShades remote administration tool (RAT) is attempting to back out of a plea deal previously made with the government.

A letter filed on Feb. 6 by Alex Yucel's lawyer, Bradley Henry, asks for a new trial date in May or June and did not mention the plea deal, according to a Reuters report.

Yucel was scheduled to meet regarding the plea deal on Feb. 9, but the hearing was canceled, according to U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel's office. Prosecutors have declined to comment on the matter. In May, Yucel plead not guilty in a federal Manhattan court.

The BlackShades RAT drew global attention that same month after an FBI-led investigation, involving law enforcement agencies in 17 countries, led to nearly 100 arrests of individuals that used or distributed the malware.
