A new report by Trend Micro shows that the increasing popularity of Linux as an operating system for cloud-based environments across various industries has made it a significant target for cybercriminals, TechGenix reports.
Currently, Linux distribution CentOS received the highest percentage of malicious attacks, with 44% of detected breaches coming from versions 7.4 to 7.9 of CentOS, according to the report, followed by CloudLinux Server with 31.24% of vulnerabilities, Ubuntu Server with 9.56% and Red Hat Enterprise Linux with 2.73%.
The report also highlighted the more than 200 different vulnerabilities in Linux environments that were targeted by threat actors in only six months, adding that the majority of those attacks centered on systems that ran old or end-of-life Linux versions.
The major threat types that were flagged in security events involving Linux systems and servers in the first half of 2021 were led by coin miners with a share of 24.56%, followed by web shells, ransomware, trojans and other types.
