Federal government making strides in cybersecurity, say experts

Cybersecurity experts have noted that the U.S. has made significant gains in bolstering federal cybersecurity since the Biden administration approved an executive order enabling threat information sharing between the public and private sectors, software supply chain security improvements, and federal cybersecurity standard modernization, according to The Hill.

"I've seen much more directive, actionable steps coming out now and I think the executive order is a big reason for that," said Veracode Chief Technology Officer Chris Wysopal, who also noted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's better threat intelligence and cybersecurity best practices sharing following the order. Since the order, Congress was also more compelled to act on strengthening federal cybersecurity. "[The order] sort of changed the status quo from best practices to practicality," Wysopal added.

Meanwhile, Booz Allen Hamilton Senior Vice President Kelly Rozualski praised the public-private partnership detailed in the order, which has compelled the creation of the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative last year. "The cyber executive order really set the foundations for how to evolve national and federal cyber defense," said Rozumalski.
