Grand Theft Auto V ‘mods’ infecting gamers with malware

In the world of gaming, people can alter the content of a game by downloading what is known as a “mod” – recently, PC gamers who downloaded certain Grand Theft Auto V mods found that they had also downloaded malware.

Two of the mods in question are called Angry Planes and No Clip, according to a Thursday post on the GTA5-mods website, which explains that the threat was not initially picked up by running the files through VirusTotal.

Gamers are being advised to delete the mods and search their systems for “Fade.exe” and other offending applications.

A lengthy topic on the GTAForums website details the issue and provides instructions on how to remove the malware. A separate analysis goes deeper into the malware threat, including how the attacker used a keylogger to capture everything typed from the keyboard.
