Help wanted: Copyeditors to clean up French phishing emails

Cybercriminals may be tiring of having their phishing scams spoiled due to poor spelling and grammar.

Trend Micro spotted a job advertisement on the French dark web looking for a part-time copyeditor. Job requirements include a six-hour work week, making corrections and cleaning up the layout of posts in an unnamed forum. The lucky new hire will be expected to work whenever called upon and could be tasked with editing several dozen posts at a time.

The criminal nature of the job is obvious as recruits are told pay will be in the form of virtual/physical goods, checks, stolen credit card data and stolen goods for an amount no higher than EUR 700.

“This job ad is something new and we do not assume it will end anytime soon. In fact, we think that the number of job advertisements will increase since it seems like a viable way for some cybercriminals to gain a foothold in the cybercriminal underground,” wrote Cedric Pernet, Trend Micro threat researcher.
