Home Depot breach spawns new phishing scam

The Home Depot attackers made off with 53 million email addresses in addition to 56 million payment cards, that much is already known, but now, those emails are being exploited for phishing scams.

Multiple reports have been filed with the Better Business Bureau saying that an email showed up in victims' inboxes stating that a dead relative left them money that they still need to claim, according to WCNC.com.

The emails reportedly tell recipients to call a ‘consulting firm' to receive their inherited money. In reality, the firm is an attacker hoping to gain a victim's bank account number. The scammers apparently use popular names from the 1930s, 40s and 50s to try and get a response.

Thousands of reports have been filed across the U.S. about this scam.
