Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued a subpoena to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) acting assistant director for congressional affairs Jason Herring during Monday's committee hearing.
The dramatic exchange is the latest escalation after the committee requested last week that the FBI, Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Justice Department, and State Department hold a classified briefing for the committee to disclose details of the FBI report.
The document was served after Herring told the committee that he could not commit to providing Congress with the FBI's full report on Hillary Clinton's email server without redactions of personally-identifiable information.
When the FBI refused to brief the committee on the report's unredacted details last week, the committee scheduled Monday's hearing. Chaffetz asked Herring to provide a copy of the full report without redactions omitting PII and summaries of interviews conducted during the agency's investigation. Herring answered, “I cannot make that commitment sitting here today.”
“Then I'm going to issue a subpoena and I'm going to do it right now,” Chaffetz responded.
