Huawei cloud security, privacy concerns raised by legislators

Huawei cloud services used by more than 40 countries pose security and privacy concerns due to system access provided to the Chinese Communist Party, according to a letter sent by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., urging Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to combat further expansion of such service use, according to The Hill.

"Huawei Cloud's e-Government services promise to help countries streamline document digitization, tax services, national ID systems, elections, and more. However, they also expose Huawei's clients to the prying eyes of the CCP. When Huawei's client is a private firm, every one of its customers is at risk," the letter said.

Cotton and Gallagher added that data of U.S. personnel in countries using Huawei products could be compromised and adversely affect the US' diplomatic, intelligence and economic initiatives.

"We must combat Huawei as a whole and target each of the company's commercial units, including their 5G, cloud services, mobile phone, and underwater cable businesses," the lawmakers wrote.
