MedStar hit with samsam ransomware: Source

MedStar Health was hit with samsam, or Samas, ransomware in an attack that forced the hospital group to take its systems offline in late March, according to story from the Associated Press (AP).

Although Medstar has refused to disclose the type of cyberattack that took place on March 28, the AP quoted a person familiar with the investigation as saying it was Samas and that the malware gained entry through the JBoss application server.

Industry experts told SCMagazine.com on March 29 that they suspected the hospital group was hit with a ransomware attack

The source also pointed out numerous warnings regarding a flaw in JBoss had been issued by the U.S. government and the software's designer Red Hat Inc. starting in 2007.

Medstar reported on April 5 that most of its systems were back online.
