Netflix goes open-source with AWS security tool

Known as one of the biggest customers of Amazon Web Server (AWS), Netflix's use of custom tools aimed at enhancing its AWS capabilities – known as the Simian Army – are well-known, and now they're going open-source with one aimed at security monitoring.

The streaming media giant has released the code for Security Monkey, a security tool it has used since 2011 to monitor and analyze security for its AWS configurations, according to a blog post by the company's cloud security team.

In addition to allowing members of the team to track and evaluate any “security-related changes and configurations” in the AWS environment, upon creation the tool was intended to scale for “large and globally distributed cloud environments.”

Other AWS users can now access the code for Security Monkey on Netflix's GitHub site.
