The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has tapped not-for-profit organization MITRE Corp. to operate its first Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) to support the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE).
Established in 2012, NCCoE is tasked with helping businesses “secure their data and digital infrastructure by bringing together experts from industry, government and academia to provide real-world cybersecurity solutions based on commercially available technologies,” a release from NIST said.
The contract awarded to MITRE was announced Wednesday, and will include three initial tasks totaling $29 million alone, which entail operations management and facilities planning among other efforts. MITRE's sole focus is to operate FFRDCs, and it currently manages six other centers. The maximum amount of funding allotted to MITRE under the contract could total $5 billion over 25 years, NIST said.
