Passkey feature for Google Cloud, Workspace enters open beta

Google has extended passkey support, previously only available to consumer Google account holders, to enterprise users with the open-beta launch of the feature for accounts on Google Cloud and Google Workspace, according to TechCrunch. Google has been one of the major proponents of switching from passwords to passkeys, as it is more convenient for users to employ the same login security measures that they already use on their own devices to log in to websites and apps, with the added security measure of needing physical access to those devices. Google says passkeys are phishing-resistant and their use twice as fast and less likely to encounter errors compared to using passwords. We championed the development of physical security keys and their standardization under the FIDO Alliance. As generally a simpler and more secure alternative to passwords, passkeys represent the culmination of this work to bring phishing-resistant technology to billions of people worldwide, said Jeroen Kemperman and Shruti Kulkarni, product manager and engineering manager, respectively, at Google Workspace.
