Officials at the City of Philadelphia have disclosed that data from an unspecified number of the city's residents may have been compromised as a result of a breach of its email system, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Attackers may have infiltrated Philadelphia's email system between May 25 and July 29, enabling access to accounts that included information, such as names, birthdates, Social Security numbers, and protected health information, as well as certain financial details, according to city officials. Potentially affected email accounts are being reviewed to determine the extent of compromise, with impacted individuals poised to be given written notification letters, but officials did not provide any information regarding the cause of the breach or its effect on city services, as well as the reason behind the city's delayed announcement of the intrusion. Such a breach comes three years after Philadelphia residents seeking services at the city's Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services and Community Behavioral Health had their data breached following a phishing attack.
