Potter County, Texas officials are assuring users that their voter information website is safe after learning that hackers gained access to it.
Administrators were alerted to the incident two weeks ago when an county worker used Google to visit the site and noticed a notation warning that the site may have been hacked, according to KTRE 9 news.
Although the site was breached, officials said it didn't appear the hackers were attempting to tamper with election results and were only trying to boost their own page views.
"What my IT department tells me is when someone hits that file another website gets the boost so it gets kind of credit for it hitting one of their webpages," Potter County Elections Administrator Melynn Huntley told the television station.
The warning hacked warning is still displayed if the site is searched via Google and may take a while to remove, but Huntley assures users precautions have been taken to ensure the site is safe.
