In a rather dubious milestone, the financial services, business, education, government and healthcare industrial sectors have collectively experienced over 6,000 data breaches since 2005 with 57.4 million government and military members' SSNs exposed, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) and IDT911.
Actually, it was 6,013, to be exact, according to a joint press release, which also reported that 6.2 million records have been compromised in 2016 alone. Moreover, of the 851 million-plus breached records since 2005, 32.7 percent exposed Social Security numbers (SSNs), while nearly 13 percent compromised credit or debit card data, the release continued.
The report found that the business sector, including the retail, hospitality and transportation industries, is responsible for 35.6 percent of U.S. breaches since 2005. And, since 2007, online hackers have exposed more than 131 million healthcare records.
