Researchers associated with the CIA have, for years, conducted tests to break the security of Apple‘s mobile products, including iPhones and iPads.
Documents recently obtained by The Intercept indicated that for over a decade, these efforts were presented at a secret annual meeting, the “Jamboree,” during which attendees discussed, “strategies for exploiting security flaws in household and commercial electronics,” The Intercept reporters wrote.
Researchers claimed to have created a modified version of Apple's Xcode software, which developers use to create apps. The modified version could insert surveillance backdoors into apps or programs created with the tool.
Any company claiming to have secure systems now needs to have “a deep and transparent set of defenses in place against these kinds of targeted cyberattacks by governments around the world,” wrote Peter Eckersley, technology projects director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in a statement emailed to SCMagazine.com.
