Two Illinois teenage students reportedly face felony charges for hacking

Two male teenagers face felony charges after authorities alleged that the 16-year-old Bartlett High School students in Illinois hacked into their school's computer system, according to the Daily Herald.

Police said Tuesday that one student was charged with aggravated computer tampering and the other student was charged with computer fraud, according to the report.

Officials with Elgin Area District U-46 said in December 2014 that the students accessed the U-46 online portal and changed student attendance records, as well as accessed the email account of at least one U-46 staff member, the report indicates.

District officials said that the students figured out how to circumvent the district's “firewall filter restrictions” and were able to install software that tracks keystrokes, the report notes. The compromised computers have been removed and Bartlett High School staff members were advised to reset passwords.
