US charges cybersecurity pros over ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware involvement

Former Sygnia Manager of Incident Response Ryan Clifford Goldberg, former DigitalMint ransomware negotiator Kevin Tyler Martin, and another co-conspirator who had worked at DigitalMint have been indicted by U.S. prosecutors over their role in ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware attacks against multiple organizations across the country between May and November 2023, reports CyberScoop.

While Goldberg, Martin, and the unnamed co-conspirator were able to obtain almost $1.3 million ransom from a Florida-based medical firm they attacked, they were unable to extort a Maryland pharmaceutical company, a Virginia drone manufacturer, a California doctor's office, and a California engineering company, according to prosecutors. Both Sygnia and DigitalMint confirmed the firing of all involved employees.

"The charged conduct took place outside of DigitalMint's infrastructure and systems. The co-conspirators did not access or compromise client data as part of the charged conduct. No one potentially involved in the charged scheme has worked at the company in over four months," said DigitalMint.
