California credit union notifies members of missing external drive

Palm Springs Federal Credit Union is notifying an undisclosed number of members that an external drive containing their personal information – including Social Security numbers and account numbers – was lost and its location is unknown.

How many victims? Undisclosed. Palm Springs Federal Credit Union did not immediately respond to a SCMagazine.com request for the information. 

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, Social Security numbers and account numbers.

What happened? An external drive containing the personal information was lost and its location is unknown.

What was the response? An investigation is ongoing. All impacted individuals are being notified, and offered a free year of identity protection services.

Details: The external drive is believed to have been lost on Oct. 20. It is not clear if the external drive was inadvertently destroyed or acquired by an unauthorized individual. The information was on the external drive as part of an audit process.

Quote: “We are currently unaware of any unauthorized access to member's accounts or attempts to gain improper access,” Debbie Pitigliano, CEO of Palm Springs Federal Credit Union, wrote in the notification to customers.
