A new bill intended to increase security for the personal information of students in California will be presented by a noted state lawmaker Thursday.
California Senator Darrell Steinberg, who is also the president pro tempore of the California Senate, has drafted the bill which serves to boost privacy and security protections for the personal information belonging to students – from kindergarten through high school – according to a report by The New York Times.
The legislation would prohibit any education-related websites, mobile apps, or online services from sharing, storing, or using the sensitive data of students for any reason outside of what the school intended or “product maintenance.”
Additionally, operators of these services would have to encrypt the data, whether it's in transit or at rest.
