FAA panel to focus on top cybersecurity risks to aircrafts

An advisory committee formed by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aims to develop international design and testing standards that will thwart cyberattacks against aircrafts.

According to a Sunday article in The Wall Street Journal, the committee consists of pilots, plane manufacturer representatives and part suppliers worldwide who were scheduled to meet in private for the first time this month. Panel co-chairman Jens Hennig told the publication that the committee will identify the top seven or eight risk areas to planes so cybersecurity standards can be developed.

News of the FAA initiative came soon after a Polish airline LOT was forced to ground several planes in Warsaw after the airline's ground computers were attacked by hackers. In April, the FBI also issued an alert to the FAA warning about hackers who might try to access airplane network ports.
