Judge says negligence case against Target can move forward

A federal judge has declined to dismiss a negligence case aimed at retailer Target filed by financial institutions and related to its massive data breach in 2013.

U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson has allowed for the case to move forward, which alleges negligence, failure to provide sufficient security and claims the company violated Minnesota's Plastic Security Card Act, according to court documents

A survey conducted by the Credit Union National Association indicates that due to the “violations at the Target stores,” credit unions have been hit with costs of more than $30 million, according to a recent release by the organization. Thus far, no credit unions have received reimbursements from Target.

Recently, a credit union trade group, the National Association of Federal Credit Unions, urged Congress to take proactive steps in establishing national data security standards for retailers.
