Nation-state cyber threats targeted by new DOJ cyber unit

Mounting cybersecurity threats from foreign adversaries have prompted the U.S. Department of Justice to introduce the new National Security Cyber Section, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Such a section, which will co-exist and collaborate with the Justice Department's Criminal Division Computer Crimes section, will be composed of prosecutors that would help investigate and disrupt nation-state threat actors and state-sponsored cyber operations, according to Assistant Attorney General and Justice Department National Security Division Chief Matthew Olsen. No additional details regarding the budget allocated to the section and the number of the section's prosecutors have been provided but Olsen said that the section would resemble how the FBI's cyber division is structured. "Our cyber adversaries are innovative and constantly adjusting their tactics to hide from our investigators and overcome our network defenders. So the National Security Division is committed to matching our adversaries by adapting our tactics and our organization," Olsen added.
