New rogue AV quashed

A new rogue anti-virus family has been added to the latest Malicious Software Removal Tool, released Tuesday by Microsoft as part of its monthly security update. The family, Win32/FakeSpypro, which goes by the name "Antivirus System PRO," blasts users with false warnings that their machines are infected, then tries to dupe them into paying $49.95 to install bogus software. In addition, the malware installs a browser helper object, which redirects certain search queries to websites that also try to hawk the rogue product by implying the site is infected with malware. — DK
