Chances of a national data breach notification law making it before the current Congress for consideration are shrinking, according to a recent GovInfoSecurity report.
In a Monday article, a senior Senate staffer told the outlet that a notification standard, which previously gained White House support, may be put on the “back burner” as lawmakers push for the passage of other bills, like the USA Freedom Act.
Currently, most states adhere to their own data breach notification laws, but some privacy advocates, including White House officials, believe that Congress should act to provide a more cohesive, over-arching standard that organizations can follow.
The Senate staffer said that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) was working with lawmakers to develop bipartisan legislation, but that it was “unlikely that such a measure would be introduced in the current Congress,” the article said.
