Google web security study often misrepresented

Google’s been in the news quite a bit this week. If the rumors that Microsoft is about to snatch up Yahoo weren’t enough, the search powerhouse revealed a redesign yesterday – strangely similar to its most recent look.

In the IT business press, the company’s been getting attention for a study its researchers published on attack vectors they’ve seen in months’ worth of web searches.

Websense has its own analysis of Google’s research published on its Threat Blog.

Google has a unique perspective on web security. No other entity has access to the sheer number of search terms that it does. And the fact alone that a company as powerful as Google is taking an interest in web security should be reassuring to administrators and surfers alike.

More good news: Reports you may have read stating that 10 percent of all websites are malicious are dead wrong. The real number is considerably less than that, but make no mistake, there is not shortage of malicious websites out there.
