Famatech's Remote Administrator provides a simple, uncomplicated remote control and file transfer facility between Windows systems.
Using client-server architecture, the software has two programs, viewer and server. The viewer communicates with its server counterpart on the remote system. The viewer has several modes of operation. It can operate in full control mode, transmitting keystrokes to the target system, or view mode, simply observing everything that happens. It can also operate in a command-line "telnet mode." This option does not require a running telnet service on the target system since all operations go through the server program. There is a file transfer facility that has a two-pane display showing the local and remote systems' storage devices.
All communications between viewer and server are 128-bit encrypted. There are a number of security enhancements over previous releases – blank passwords can no longer be used, and there is better integration with Windows security features such as Active Directory.
Although the server software will still run as a free-standing program under Windows 95 and its descendants, it will only run as a service on Windows NT and above.
The software is downloadable as shareware from Famatech's website, and you can install and run both viewer and server programs on the same system.
The software installs with a default port number, but any number can be selected. Each server can be assigned a different port number, since the viewer software will store port number details for each server in its connection lists. Good security practice says to avoid using the default port number, especially if communicating through firewalls.
Each server can be configured to accept connections only from specified IP addresses and subnets.
The software can also be used over a modem, provided that the viewer and server systems have the required Windows dial-up services running. It is also possible to use null modem connections over serial links in a similar way.
