An alleged dump of eBay user records has been made available for purchase, a day after officials at the popular auction and shopping website made the announcement that a breach occurred sometime between late February and early March.
eBay claims the dump is fake, reports say.
In a short note posted to Pastebin on Thursday, 145,312,663 of purported eBay user records are being offered for 1.453 Bitcoins, or about $750. According to the message, the dump will be sent to users who email the Bitcoin transaction ID to ‘[email protected].'
The post includes a sample of 12,663 user records.
Researchers with security firm Rapid7 analyzed the sample and determined there were “some matches between email prefixes and eBay profile names where people are using the same handle,” but nothing substantial to confirm its authenticity, according to a Thursday statement emailed to SCMagazine.com.
