A member of the Megaupload conspiracy plead guilty on Friday to copyright infringement charges and has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison.
The computer programmer, 36-year-old Andrus Nomm of Estonia, confessed to his involvement with Megaupload.com and other piracy websites, most notably stating that he was aware that the websites hosted copyright-infringing content, according to a release by the Justice Department. Additionally, Nomm – who was arrested in January 2012 in the Netherlands – conceded that the total amount of harm caused by the site's criminal conduct is more than $400 million.
“This conviction is a significant step forward in the largest criminal copyright case in U.S. history,” Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell said.
Co-defendant and Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom is scheduled for an extradition hearing in June 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand.
