Starting this week, Google has begun removing some search results in accordance with a European decision requiring the company to allow users to request results about themselves to be deleted.
The company sent its first emails today informing individuals that their requested links were being taken down, according to The Wall Street Journal. Even though its link removal form was recently made available to users, the company has received more than 41,000 requests.
The ruling, or the “right to be forgotten,” passed in May and ordered Google to delete the search results; the websites themselves won't necessarily have to delete their web pages.
Initially, Google had planned to highlight the fact that a link had been removed, but later opted to forgo those plans in order to please European regulators.
