A card skimming device and camera were found at a New York City subway station last night after an astute commuter notified Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials.
The device was attached to a MetroCard machine at the Columbus Circle 1 train station, according to an MTA press release. A pinhole-size camera hole was disguised as an electrical outlet above the vending machine and connected to a battery pack.
MTA employees are checking subway stations across the city after the device's discovery. A public information campaign is also going to be developed to remind riders to be aware when purchasing fare cards.
Multiple other skimming devices have been found in the New York City area, including one scheme that affected at least 50 bank accounts.
