April Fools study finds cybersecurity pros trust fictitious stats as much as or more than experts

Researchers played an April Fools' Day joke a little early on several attendees of this past RSA Conference when Authentic8 researchers found that 88 percent of cybersecurity professionals trust fictitious figures as much if not more than other industry experts.

Researchers conducted their “Cybersecurity Approval Poll” at RSA 2019, polling 294 professionals, and found 88 percent of respondents stated that they trusted the made-up Mr. Keyes, the face behind F.A.K.E. Security “much more,” “slightly more” or “about the same” as other cybersecurity vendors and experts.

The study also asked where organizations are most exposed and vulnerable to which 33.67 percent responded endpoint security, 33.33 percent responded data security, 30.61 percent responded application security, 27.55 percent said network security, and 22.45 percent said perimeter security.

When asked which applications put their organization most at risk, 34 percent of respondents reported web browsers came in first, followed by 32 percent who said email clients, just under 13 percent said SaaS app, nearly 12 percent said internal/ intranet app and not quite 9 percent said on-premises vendor apps.
