Calif. recycling program emails employees’ SSNs

California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) sent emails to personnel liaisons that contained employees' sensitive information, including Social Security numbers.

How many victims? Undisclosed. CalRecycle employs more than 600 employees, according to its online staff directory.

What type of personal information? Employee's first initial, middle initial, last name and Social Security number.

What happened? CalRecycle sent out emails to personnel liaisons that contained the personal information and the Human Resources Office was later notified. 

What was the response? The recycling group notified employees about the breach through an email and directed the personnel liaisons to delete the sensitive emails. Employees were also sent information on signing up for fraud monitoring.

Details: The incident occurred on January 23, according to the group's statement.
