Listen: ORPEA Group’s Mauro Israel on putting in the work

Mauro Israel is an avid poker player, having studied the game since he was a teenager and written several books on the topic. But even after all the reading he's done on the game and the countless hands he's played, he says he still has a lot to learn. To become good at something, "You have to work, and you have to work again," he says. In short: there is no substitute for experience.

The same is true in cybersecurity, a field that is constantly evolving, especially in the wake of COVID-19. In episode 8 of the CISO Stories podcast series, Israel, CISO of ORPEA Group, talks with Sam Curry, chief security officer at Cybereason, about how the pandemic has affected the demand for certain skills and jobs and his advice for young people looking to break into the industry ("Be 'Triple A's.' ... analog adaptive apes."). He also discusses his early days programming on a TRS-80, the moment he realized cybersecurity was a potential career path and how Yuval Noah Harari's book Sapiens changed his life.
