Microsoft on Tuesday reported that for a number of Azure customers running Ubuntu 18.04 virtual machines (VMs), a bug in this version will lead to DNS resolution errors.
Microsoft highlighted the DNS bug and a potential fix on the Canonical/Ubuntu website. The company said a potential workaround customers can consider is to reboot impacted VMs so they receive a fresh DHCP lease and new DND resolvers.
For the Azure Public Cloud, Microsoft said its engineering team has completed deploying the first step of the fix to all the clusters across all regions worldwide. The second step has begun, which will recognize the impacted clusters and then execute the actual mitigation.
DNS, while a simple technology, often serves as the root cause of operational issues, said Christopher Prewitt, chief technology officer at Inversion6.
“Even large hyperscalers have issues with DNS, Prewitt said. “While often these issues are DNS server or service related, this is a specific issue in Ubuntu 18.04.”
Dave Gerry, chief operating officer at Bugcrowd, added that as organizations have moved business-critical applications to cloud providers over the past two years as a result of supporting the shift to remote work, outages like this one are a good reminder of the need for a hybrid and multi-cloud deployment strategy.
“Companies also need to do thorough testing of patches before deployment, especially with open-source products,” Gerry said.
