The North Carolina Attorney General's office has taken the unusualstep of advising customers of BJ's Wholesale Club, a major retailer in the region, to monitor their credit card statements.
The warning comes after the retailer discovered its computer system security had been breached earlier this month, by hackers who gained access to the retailer's network from inside the company's firewall using its WiFi network.
BJ's Wholesale Club claims that the hackers only gained access to the records of a few hundred of the club's eight million members.
The Attorney General's office says that no arrests in connection with
the hack have been made and that, so far, no customers have reported any unauthorised charges on their accounts.

BJ's said that it has now hired security consultants to check out security and is taking steps to tighten its safeguards, especially
