A wide-ranging ransomware attack has hit 23 government entities in Texas, most of them “smaller, local governments,” the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) confirmed Saturday.
While the government won’t reveal the names of the organizations affected by the attack, which began Friday morning, the DIR said that state of Texas networks and systems weren’t impacted.
“At this time, the evidence gathered indicates the attacks came from one single threat actor,” the DIR said in a release, noting that “it appears all entities that were actually or potentially impacted have been identified and notified.”
The state government is focused on getting systems back up and running and has tapped resources from multiple sources, including the DIR, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, Texas A&M University System’s Security Operations Center/Critical Incident Response Team, the Department of Public Safety, the state Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the FBI and FEMA.
