By Marcos Colon

Given the enormous popularity and effectiveness of ransomware attacks for cyber swindlers, attackers have decided to up the ransom fee of most online assaults.

A new report by Symantec notes that the ransomware demand has increased by 266 percent – from $294 in 2015 to $1,077 in 2016.

Why would attackers choose to up the costs? Why not, seeing as 64 percent of victims are willing to pay the ransom in the U.S., compared to 34 percent globally, according to study says, and the U.S. is the number-one targeted country.

“Symantec identified over 100 new malware families released into the wild, more than triple the amount seen previously, and a 36 percent increase in ransomware attacks worldwide,” according to a blost post on the report.
