Security and business continuity are top concerns when moving to cloud

Sixty-two percent of organisations leave data protection and availability of in-cloud data to third-party cloud providers.

New research from CTERA Networks has revealed that the protection of cloud-based servers and applications hasn't fully evolved to meet enterprise requirements for business continuity and data availability.

The study examined 400 IT decision makers and IT specialists in organisations using the cloud for application deployment at US, German and French organisations.

More than two-thirds (67 percent) of organisations deploy more than 25 percent of their applications in the cloud, and 37 percent plan to grow their cloud use by at least 25 percent, if not more.

Moreover, 54 percent of organisations are embracing a hybrid cloud strategy that leverages both on-premises and cloud services.

Sixty-six percent strongly agree or somewhat agree there is less focus on backing up applications in the cloud due to a misconception that the cloud is inherently resilient compared to on-premises applications.

Thirty-nine percent claim that ensuring business continuity is the highest priority when backing up and protecting applications and data running in the cloud. Data protection and availability are cited by 71 percent of organisations as one of the biggest challenges when moving to the cloud.

Thirty-six percent report that the loss of data in the cloud would be worse than their data centre crashing, and 14 percent claim it would cost them their jobs.

“The enterprise's move beyond traditional data centres has rewritten the playbook for data protection in the cloud. As organisations adopt cloud and multi-cloud strategies, traditional backup tools fall down. Our research spotlights the key data protection considerations and challenges for enterprises as they look for simple, efficient and automated solutions that protect critical cloud-based applications,” said Jeff Denworth, SVP marketing, CTERA Networks.
