St. Louis sewer employee fired for downloading Social Security numbers of 1,600 employees

Who are the victims? 1,600 current or former employees of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District.

What kind of personal information? Social Security numbers.

What happened? District administrators learned on June 20 that an employee had downloaded the SSNs.

What was the response? District managers fired the employee, whose name was not disclosed in media reports, and called the St. Louis police and the FBI.
Federal agents confiscated the computer. On June 29, the district sent a letter to affected individuals.
The FBI has forwarded the matter to the U.S. Justice Department for review.
