A federal lawsuit against the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and a human resources software company was dropped earlier this week, just a couple days after its filing.
Benjamin Sweet and other attorneys contended that UPMC and Ultimate Software Group were at fault for the breach of thousands of hospital employees' information, however, upon further review, Ultimate Software Group was found to have no affiliation with the hospital, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The attorneys hoped this case would be a federal class-action lawsuit due to the more than $5 million in damages related to the breach. They continue to pursue a February lawsuit against UPMC and UPMC McKeesport filed in Common Pleas Court.
At least 788 UPMC employees suffered from fraudulent tax frauds after the breach and the unknown attackers had access to up to 27,000 employees' personal information.
