The V-Pass FX is a small fingerprint scanner that provides a way to control physical access to facilities using biometrics. This product can be either used by itself or in conjunction with an already deployed external Wiegand reader. This small device provides simple biometric access control using the FVC 2002 and 2004 algorithm and can be deployed anywhere throughout the environment.
We found this product to be easy to setup and simple to use. The initial installation is a two-step process. The first is to install the cabling for the reader and install the drivers onto the management station. The second step is to install the VeriAdmin software on the management station, which can be running Windows XP or Windows Server. Once the reader was connected, we simply ran the VeriAdmin software and connected to the device. From there we could easily enroll users using one of two modes: Quick Enroll or Advanced Enroll.
This system performed quite well during our testing process. We found it easy to enroll user fingerprints, and the fingerprint templates can be stored locally on the reader itself or on the management station. The system also rates the quality of the scanned fingerprint so administrators can be sure a user is accurately enrolled, which means less chance of false positives or negatives.
There are several PDF documents contained on a provided CD. Three of these include a quick-start guide, installation guide and an operations manual. The quick-start guide contains the basic initial setup and wiring information for the reader itself.
Bioscrypt offers two basic levels of support. Support can be obtained either per incident or via a standard support plan. Both of these include phone and email technical support during core business hours. There is also a support section on the website which contains product documentation, enrollment tips and a FAQ section.
If you are looking for simple biometric access control to secured areas, at a price of $850 per scanner, this product is a good value for the money. It is not only cost effective, but easy to manage and administer.
