Installation and deployment is quite straightforward and it did not take us long to get the appliance up with a basic configuration. The product is deployed between the network and an existing firewall as it does not have a firewall of its own. After the appliance is placed into the network, the setup wizard can be accessed through the GUI. This wizard helps set basic network information and policy configuration. After the completion of the wizard, all further management is done through the web GUI.
We found the web GUI to be well-organized and fairly intuitive to navigate, but there is a slight learning curve to become solidly familiar with how to manage the appliance. With that said, we did find that this product does have a lot of configurable options and provides a reasonable amount of flexibility in setting up policies.
Documentation included a short quick-start guide and full user manual. The guide explains in excellent detail how to position the appliance in the network, as well as shows and explains the steps of the setup wizard. The user manual provides a much more in-depth look at how to configure the appliance features and includes many screen shots and examples.
SecPoint offers full, 24/7 online chat, phone and email technical support as part of the ongoing subscription price of the appliance.
At a price of $1,550 - for 10 users with one-year subscription and support - we find the SecPoint Protector to be an average value for the money. While it does offer solid functionality in some areas, it falls short in others - i.e., it does not have its own onboard firewall, which is a fairly common function for an appliance in this product class.
