Sony investigation reveals North Korea behind cyber attack, FBI says

Following an investigation of the recent Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) hack, the FBI has concluded the North Korean government is behind the cyber attack.

The agency worked in “collaboration with other U.S. government departments and agencies” to conduct the investigation and gather information which they believe serves as a solid indication that the North Korean government conducted the attack, according to the agency.

Although the FBI didn't mention specific methods as to how the information was gathered, a “technical analysis” of the malware in the attack – as well as the attack infrastructure – draws connections to previous North Korean actors and malicious cyber activity linked to the country.

The attack, which U.S. investigators believe was a result hackers swiping system administrator credentials, forced SPE to drop the release of “The Interview,” the film believed to be the catalyst for the attack.
