Stolen USC computer contains confidential data on 7,000

Some 7,000 students, staff and faculty have their personal information stored on a desktop comptuer that was stolen from an office in the business school at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

What type of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers.

What happened? The computer was stolen from an office inside the Moore School of Business during the Memorial Day Weekend.

What was the response? The school is notifying 130 faculty and staff members at the business school and just under 7,000 studnets who took business classes last year.

Details: There is no reason to believe any of the data will be used fraudulently, officials said.
