Organizations are increasingly looking towards AI platforms as a solution to the advancing tide of fraudulent emails and phishing attempts.
The hope is that AI and automation platforms will allow network defenders to free themselves up to better handle more pressing threats and easily isolate suspicious messages. At the same time, organizations are also fearful of the potential for AI platforms to enable threat actors. The most prevalent fear amongst cybersecurity decision makers is that attackers will be able to make use of AI platforms as a way to not only automate their attacks, but make their existing fraud attempts more effective. This has raised strong concerns among more than half of our survey respondents (55%) that more sophisticated AI-generated emails are becoming more difficult to spot.
Elsewhere, security leaders and practitioners have expressed concerns that employees — junior-level employees and senior-level executives alike — are too often missing the mark in spotting fraudulent emails. Even with phishing training emails, “the click rate is still too high,” as one respondent noted.
Accordingly, dangerous threats such as business email compromise attacks are at their highest levels ever.
