Clampi (aka Ligats or Ilomo) is an information theft botnet. The malcode is a multicomponent tool that injects code into running processes, alters the PC's configuration and, once established, begins to harvest and send sensitive information from the PC to its handlers.
The internet has come under a sustained and significant threat from network malware, especially since the emergence of the global Windows network worm in 2001 with Code Red and Nimda. Prior to this, most network worms were on a small, localized scale.
Just as the number of end-users enlisting instant messaging (IM) programs to communicate has risen, so too has the number of distinct families of IM-based malware. More attackers are utilizing this propagation method and infections are increasingly sophisticated.
